The Chew House is located in one of the oldest residential precincts in Kuching. Its earlier architectural tone is set by a number of pre-war family mansions along one side of the street. The contemporary architectural gesture of the Chew House reflects the next generation of dwellings within this mature neighbourhood.
The house is set a fair distance from the street for privacy, and perhaps also out of an awareness that its bold form and language would require time (and distance?) to meld into the established streetscape.
The house employs steep gable roofs with deep eaves and projecting ledges to shade the terraces that form an extension of the internal spaces. These devices, and the richness of the house’s layered spaces and materials, embody the essence of modern tropical living.
